High-flying Nothando is 2024’s top B.Com Graduate

KWALUSENI: Nothando Kunene, a determined graduate from UNESWA has emerged as one of the best-performing students in the Bachelor of Commerce program, majoring in Accounting and Finance. Hailing from the rural town of Siphofaneni, Kunene’s journey to academic excellence wasn’t easy, but her passion for accounting led her to achieving this personal goal.

Kunene began her educational journey at Siphofaneni Primary School and later attended Duze High School, where her love for accounting was augmented. This passion drove her to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce degree at UNESWA, specializing in Accounting and Finance. Reflecting on her time at the university, Kunene describes it as an “interesting journey” marked by new experiences, group study sessions, and countless sleepless nights.”

However, the road to success was not without its challenges. Kunene faced the demanding task of balancing coursework, studying for exams, and keeping up with readings, which at times felt overwhelming. “I understood that my academics were the foundation, so I made sure to prioritize my coursework,” Hlophe said.

Perhaps the most significant challenge Kunene encountered came during her final year when she tragically lost her mother, who had been her sole source of financial support. This devastating loss forced Kunene to make ends meet by relying on handouts from friends and family. Despite this emotional and financial hardship, she persevered, determined to complete her degree.

Among her many accomplishments at university, Kunene is particularly proud of a group project she worked on during her final year. The research focused on the relationship between financial technology services and bank customer satisfaction in Matsapha, Eswatini.

Kunene’s most memorable moment was receiving four academic awards during her graduation, a feat she never thought possible. Coming from a rural background, she had not imagined she could surpass many of her peers and achieve recognition as;

* Best Commerce Student (Dean’s Prize)

* Best Accounting Student (SNG Prize)

* Best Student in Business Finance (FNB Book Prize)

* Best Student in Entrepreneurship (FINCORP Prize)

Now a graduate, Kunene is focused on her next goal—becoming a Chartered Accountant. She believes that the strong foundation she received at UNESWA, particularly in accounting principles, financial reporting, and analysis, has prepared her well for her future career.

Kunene’s advice to current students at the University of Eswatini is both practical and motivational. “Nothing is impossible,” she said, urging students to prioritize their studies and ensure they don’t sleep without opening their books. She also emphasizes the importance of faith, encouraging students to trust in God, even when things don’t make sense.
