Ex-South Africa Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni dies

Former South Africa Reserve Bank Governor, Tito Mboweni has died. His family announced his death last night, saying he died yesterday at a Johannesburg hospital following a short illness. He was 65.

Mboweni is probably the most recognized member of the South African political elite, in and out of Government. He served as Minister of Finance from 2018 and resigned in 2021.

He graduated in economics in 1985 from the National University of Lesotho where he lived in exile in the 1980s and became the first Black South African to be Governor of the Reserve Bank from 1999 to 2009 before going into the private sector to be recalled by President Cyril Ramaphosa to become Minister of Finance on 9 October 2018.

While in Lesotho he joined the ANC and was an activist.

A charismatic personality, Mboweni retired to his farm in the Limpompo where he named himself Duke of Magoebaskloef and became legendary for his cooking skills, centred around his signature dish of Lucky Star tinned fish and lots of garlic.
