A spark of genius from Mafutseni marks Naledi Nene’s journey to academic triumph

MANZINI: In a tale of determination and triumph, Naledi Nene has captured hearts and accolades by graduating at the top of her class in Agricultural Economics and Agri-Business Management, earning the esteemed Dean’s Award. Her journey from a humble village to academic excellence showcases the power of resilience and a passion for community upliftment.

Growing up in the vibrant village of Mafutseni, Naledi was shaped by the values instilled by her single mother and grandmother. “The time I spent with my now late grandma was the best of my life; she instilled values in me that I still hold dear even today,” she recalls.

The reality of life in Mafutseni, where agriculture is a lifeline, sparked Naledi’s interest in the field. “I witnessed firsthand the struggles of local farmers and understood the critical role agriculture plays in our economy,” she explains.

Determined to make a difference, she pursued a degree that would equip her with the tools to address the very challenges she observed.

Among her cherished childhood memories are the simple pleasures of enjoying roasted corn on rainy days and picking vegetables from her family’s garden. These experiences deepened her commitment to agriculture, fueling her desire to help others commercialize their farming efforts.

Despite facing financial challenges, Naledi remained undeterred. Coming from a humble background, she drew strength from her faith and the values instilled in her. Her determination to succeed was unwavering, as she focused on academics and community engagement. “I faced difficulties, but I never let them define me,” she says. “My faith and the support of my family kept me focused on my goals.”

Her hard work paid off when she received the Dean’s Award for her outstanding performance. She has also made significant strides in research, exploring climate change adaptation strategies for farmers. Under the guidance of Dr. D. Kibirige, she delved into how climate change impacts agricultural production, aiming to find solutions that can benefit her community.

Her recent internship at RESc ignited a passion for the sugar industry, where she envisions fostering economic growth for local farmers. “I want to empower them to not just grow crops but to build sustainable livelihoods,” she asserts.

For Naledi, faith is integral to her journey. “Your background does not have to define your future. With God, all things are possible,” she believes. Her story is one of hope, proving that dedication, faith, and community support can lead to remarkable achievements.
