MAPUTO: Frelimo which has ruled Mozambique since independence in 1975 has retained power, winning the 9 October election with a landslide in results announced this afternoon. Daniel Chapo now becomes president, succeeding Felipe Nyusi.
The results which show Frelimo winning by a 70% landslide, while Venâncio Mondlane came in second with 20% of the vote. Mozambique was rocked by post elections violence on Monday following the killing last Friday of key opposition figures Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe of the PUDEMOS party that backed Mondlane. Mondlane who called for public protests to show outrage at the killings, has called for more today and tomorrow.
