King lands in Ghana to Royal welcome

ACCRA (25 June 2025): His Majesty King Mswati III who is in Ghana, accompanied by Inkhosikati LaMagongo and a high-level delegation were welcomed with full cultural and military honours when they arrived in Accra at the start of a four-day State Visit.

This morning, the King who is already in Kumasi as guest of the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the capital of the Ashanti Principality, addressed the National House of Chiefs. The Asantehene is head of the Ashanti principality within the Republic of Ghana. He is venerated as “the Occupant of the Golden Stool”.

Yesterday, after a reception at the Kotoka International Airport, His Majesty was escorted to the Jubilee House, where President, John Dramani Mahama and the Vice-President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang welcomed the King with a military salute.

His Majesty also held bilateral discussions with the President of the Republic of Ghana and the two Heads of State then witnessed the signing by the Foreign Ministers of the two countries of an agreement establishing a Joint Commission for Cooperation (JCC). It seeks to foster bilateral understanding between the Kingdom of Eswatini and the Republic of Ghana and consultations at all levels regarding bilateral relations and international issues of common interest.

According to the Ghana Presidency, His Majesty’s visit is scheduled for Tuesday, 24 June to Saturday, 28 June 2025, spanning four days of official engagements.

Yesterday afternoon, the King met officials at the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat in Accra before departing for Kumasi later in the day.

In Kumasi, His Majesty is the distinguished guest of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. The itinerary in the Asante capital includes official visits to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and a tour of the historic Manhyia Palace Museum. King Mswati III is also scheduled to address the National House of Chiefs and attend a grand durbar of chiefs organised in his honour at Manhyia Palace.

A Royal Banquet will be held in Kumasi on Friday evening. On Saturday, the final day of the visit, King Mswati III will join the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at a ceremony at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) before departing from Ghana.

King Mswati III’s visit is expected to significantly strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between Ghana and the Kingdom of Eswatini and deepen the historical and cultural links between the Asante Kingdom and the southern African nation.

The visit marks the first time King Mswati III has visited Ghana and hosted by President Mahama since his return to the Presidency on January 7, 2025.

Though the Kingdom and Ghana have not yet established embassies, the Eswatini High Commissioner in Addis Ababa is accredited to Ghana while the Ghana High Commissioner to South Africa is accredited to Swaziland. An Honorary Consul, Kobla Quashie also represents Ghana interests in the Kingdom.

From Accra His Majesty proceeded to Kumasi, where he is guest of the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at his Manhyia Palace. For the next three days, the King will attend colourful cultural ceremonies including a grand durbar.

His Majesty’s is on a reciprocal mission to return the visit of the Asantehene to the Kingdom in 2015. During that visit, the Asante leader attended the Umhlanga Ceremony at Ludzidzini.
